Announcing the “Bring Google to the Light Campaign”
Posted on August 25th, 2010 1 commentIt occured to me today that the best way to handle Google’s recent foray into the dark side with their “net neutrality” framework penned with their buddy Verizon is to try to do something about it. Too often I find myself bitching and moaning about how much something sucks but very rarely am I moved to action. Perhaps I’m being melodramatic but I feel like there is much at stake if Google/Verizon get their wishes on the future of internet regulation. My plan moving forward is to begin a campaign to try and influence google to “back to the light” and once again take up their mantle of “Don’t be evil”. I always viewed google as one of the biggest champions of freedom (I view access to information to be a huge component of that), as well as standing up for the best interests of technology meant to make information more accessible. I view their partnership with verizon and their about-face in policy regarding net neutrality to be an act of betrayal to their own principles as well as the interests of every private citizen, government, and corporation. This move aims to do nothing but fatten their bottom line at the expense true equality across the internet. This my friends, is the digital fight of our time.

Google regurgitates it’s policy as “fact” to refute “myths” about it’s anti-net neutrality
Posted on August 12th, 2010 No commentsJust moments ago Google posted this drivel on their official blog. It’s presented as a series of “facts” meant to refute the “myths” about it’s legislative framework for net neutrality. I am astounded that they actually expected to essentially repeat bullet points from their official policy and get a different response from critics of their plans with verizon. I’m starting to feel like google is the fourth branch of government, i’m used to getting this from politicians.

Is the google honeymoon over? Privacy and net neutrality sacrificed for profit
Posted on August 9th, 2010 1 commentUPDATE: Latest announcements from Google/Verizon posted here: http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com/2010/08/joint-policy-proposal-for-open-internet.html I’m still not terribly impressed personally, it reads to me like verizon won’t tamper with land-line traffic (Which is a moot point because they can’t anyway) but in the wireless spectrum all bets are off. So in other words, a bunch of furniture got moved around and [...]

Get Geo Coordinates from Google Maps in PHP
Posted on February 5th, 2010 No commentsGoogle maps offers a rich api for getting a lot of information as you are probably already aware. I’ve written a few locators in the last couple of years involving the use of google maps and doing radial searches based on zip codes. The difficult part for me was getting the geo coordinates of the queried zip code to use as a reference point for doing the radial search. I ended up writing a nice simple class to encapsulate converting zip codes into geo-coordinates.

Google lays down the gauntlet with ChromeOS
Posted on November 20th, 2009 No commentsWe all knew it was coming. There were rumors and flat out denials from Google so of course it had to be true. It was the logical path for them and anyone who paid attention to the types of software they’ve been releasing could clearly see the writing on the wall. Every time Google made an announcement or released something new, the was the immediate response… why? Every app, framework, website, tool, they have ever released is a piece of a puzzle that when assembled shows you Google’s over-arching strategy. You just have to step back a little bit to see

A month with Google Chrome
Posted on September 1st, 2009 No commentsSome of you may remember my inflammatory article about the demise of firefox, and I thought it would be wise to post a follow up as I am a man of my word and when the situation on the ground changes, I like to re-evaluate my opinions. As stated in the previous article, once chromium [...]
